Background

What is Form E?

Form E is the standard financial disclosure form used in divorce and civil partnership financial remedy proceedings in England and Wales. Each person completes their own. It sets out your income, property, savings, pensions, debts and financial needs, with supporting documents attached.

You need it if either of you applies to the court for a financial order (Form A). Some couples also exchange Form E voluntarily during mediation or solicitor negotiations, so both sides can see the full picture before agreeing a settlement.

In court proceedings, Form E is normally filed at court and exchanged with your ex no later than 35 days before the First Directions Appointment, unless your court order says otherwise. You sign a statement of truth at the end, so accuracy matters.

Highly recommend!

I found Divorcecompanion to be an invaluable tool in helping me create a Consent Order. Before using Divorcecompanion I'd downloaded the 41 page 2.1 Financial remedy order which looked really complicated, so I'd envisaged putting together a consent order would take me at least a couple of weeks. Divorce companion did all the hard work for me and created a tailor-made Consent Order which perfectly fitted my needs. The level of service was impressive.

Didn't realise how much I didn't know

My ex and I had agreed everything between us so I thought the paperwork would be the easy bit, it really wasn't. I logged on out of curiosity and that's when I realised divorce and the financial settlement are two completely separate processes. I had no idea.

★★★★★

Form E made manageable

Not going to lie, I had no clue what Form E even was when my solicitor mentioned it. Started on the free Clarity plan just to get my bearings and it actually explained the whole process in plain English, wish I'd found it sooner.

★★★★★

From experience, this helps

I'm genuinely so impressed with this website. It's not only incredibly informative, but also feels so friendly and easy to navigate, something that's really important when you're going through a difficult time.

Took a huge weight off my shoulders

I've only just started using DivorceCompanion, but it's already taken a huge weight off my shoulders. The Clarity Plan showed straight away that my route was amicable and explained everything in simple, plain English.

Who it's for

Is this the right tool for you?

It suits you if:

  • You are divorcing in England or Wales and the court is being asked to decide your finances
  • Your finances are fairly straightforward: a home, bank accounts, pensions, employment income and ordinary debts
  • You want to complete Form E yourself instead of paying a solicitor to fill it in for you
Want to see how Form E fits into your whole journey?

Your free Clarity Plan shows your personalised route, likely next steps, timeline and costs — whether you already know you need Form E or you're still deciding what comes next.

When to get legal advice first

Get advice from a family solicitor before you rely on a self-help tool if there are business interests, trusts, overseas assets or property, complex pensions, a suspicion that your ex is hiding assets, or any safety concern such as domestic abuse. You can still use the builder to organise your figures, then take targeted advice on the harder points.

If you are in danger, contact the Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 (free, 24/7).

Use your budget where it matters
Do the Form E data entry yourself. Save professional advice for where you need it.

Even if you're working with a solicitor, filling in Form E yourself can save you money — much of it is information only you can provide, and every hour you enter it yourself is an hour they don't need to bill you for.

Frequently asked questions

Form E online: common questions

What is Form E?

Form E is the financial statement each person completes in divorce financial remedy proceedings in England and Wales, disclosing income, assets, debts, pensions and financial needs.

Do I have to complete Form E?

It is compulsory if you or your ex apply to the court for a financial order. If you settle finances by agreement, you may not need one, though some couples complete it voluntarily so both sides have full disclosure.

When is Form E due?

Normally filed at court and exchanged with your ex no later than 35 days before the First Directions Appointment, unless your court order says otherwise. Check the dates in your court notice.

Can I complete Form E without a solicitor?

Many people do, particularly when finances are straightforward. Get legal advice if there are businesses, trusts, overseas assets, suspected hidden assets or safety concerns.

What documents do I need?

Typically 12 months of bank statements, a property valuation and mortgage statement, pension Cash Equivalent Transfer Values (CETVs), payslips and a P60, and statements for any loans, credit cards and investments. Request pension CETVs first, as they can take weeks to arrive.

Do you file Form E with the court for me?

No. The builder prepares your completed Form E as a PDF. You review it, sign the statement of truth, and file and exchange it as your court order directs.

Is DivorceCompanion a law firm?

No. DivorceCompanion is a digital guidance platform. We provide general information and document-preparation tools, not legal advice.
